Yonan cares for caterpillar eggs by clipping off the milkweed they lay on and bringing them indoors. She releases them as butterflies three to four weeks later.

On July 6, just one day after the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, or NSMAD, performed a scheduled mosquito spraying of Winnetka and surrounding areas, Yonan’s entire colony of caterpillars died overnight.
