Over the course of a 47-year career with the Chicago Public School system, Mary Jo Nyhan enjoyed her roles as a teacher, counselor and administrator. But her greatest joy was serving as principal of the Arts of Living alternative school, which served pregnant and parenting teens.

From the early 1990s to 2003, when CPS closed the school, Nyhan focused on creating a multi-dimensional program that allowed the young girls not to miss valuable time with their studies.
